Curriculum for Medicine.
Introductory Medicine: Introduction to Medicine and objectives of the Medicine curriculum. History taking and analysis of the history:  (pain, fever weight loss etc,) Synthesis of symptoms of Cardiovascular disease (Breathlessness, cough, chest pain) Synthesis of symptoms of respiratory disease (Breathlessness, cough, chest pain) , Synthesis of symptoms of CNS disease. Synthesis of symptoms of GIT and Urogenital systems (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, swelling, frequency, oliguria, polyuria, haematuria etc)  The general physical examination.1 (general appearance, palor, jaundice, dehydration, the mouth, nails, finger clubbing), General physical examination 2 (lymph nodes, skin lesion, oedema) Examination of the Cardiovascular system. (General physical signs related to CVS, the pulse, and the jugular venous pulse), Examination of the Cardiovascular system II (Examination of the preacordium, inspection, palpation and auscultation.), Examination of the Respiratory system I (General signs related to the respiratory system inspection palpation, percussion of the chest,) Examination of the Respiratory system2 (Signs f consolidation, fibrosis, collapse, pneumothorax and pleural effusion) pathophysiological basis.  Examination of the Gastro-intestinal system (Approach to the patient with GIT disease, General signs Inspection, palpation, percussion auscultation. Examination of the Gastro-intestinal system, Examination of the Liver, spleen, Kidneys, Ascites, rectal examination, Evaluation of impairment of consciousness, Examination of cranial nerves. Evaluation of lesions of the pyramidal tract and peripheral nerves  (upper and lower motor neuron lesions)
Phase 1, II, &III: Investigations in Cardiology 1:  The ECG (Rate, rhythm, axis, hypertrophy pattern, chamber enlargement, ischaemia, dyselectrolytaemia) Investigations in Cardiology 2: The Chest radiograph (Normal CXR, aortic unfolding, mitral stenosis etc), principles of Echocardiography, Diabetes mellitus (Definition, Classification and Diagnosis), Acute Complications of Diabetes mellitus (Hyperglycemic emergencies and therapy). Chronic complications of diabetes (Neuropathy, Nephropathy, retinopathy, Angiopathy and Diabetic foot) ,Treatment of diabetes (life style modification, diet, drugs, indications for insulin, targets of control). Disorders of thyroid function (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) Aetiology, Pathogenesis, presentation and management. Disorders of calcium metabolism: hypocalcaemia and hypercalcaemia (aetiology, pathogenesis and mg’t), Hypopituitarism: epidemiology, clinical presentation, investigations and management. Disorders of hypothalamic pituitary- adrenal axis (Cushing’s and Addison’s diseases: pathogenesis, clinical features, investigations and management) Asthma (definition, epidemiology, pathogenesis, investigations, management and complications), Suppurative Lung disease (Definition, epidemiology, types, presentation, management and complications) Tuberculosis (Epidemiology, immunity and clinical presentation.) Laboratory diagnosis and drug treatment of tuberculosis including multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, Pneumococcal pneumonia (clinicals and management), The atypical pneumonias. Pneumoconiosis (Definition, epidemiology, types, presentation, management and complications) Chronic Bronchitis and emphysema (definition, epidemiology, pathogenesis, management and complications) HIV infection I (epidemiology, clinicals, staging & complications) HIV infection II (drug treatment and complications of therapy) Systemic Hypertension I (Epidemiology, primary vs secondary HTN, staging/ grading, presentation) treatment and prevention Heart Failure (pathophysiology, aetiology, precipitating factors and clinical presentation) Heart failure (investigations, management, complications)Cardiomyopathies (definition, classification, diagnosis and  management) Rheumatic fever (pathogenesis, clinical features, Jones criteria, Management.) Upper GIT haemorrhage (definition, classification, aetiology, investigations and  management) The Malabsorbtion syndrome (definition, aetiology, investigations and management), Polyarthritis Acute viral hepatitis (aetiology, clinical features, investigations, complications and treatment) Chronic Liver disease (definition, classification, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinicals, complications and management), Peptic Ulcer Disease (pathogenesis, clinical presentation, investigations, differential diagnosis and treatment.), Investigations in Neurology (X-rays, EEG, CAT scan, MRI etc): principles and application Cerebro vascular disease (Epidemiology, presentation, & management ) COMA: causes, investigations and management.  Seizure disorders and Epilepsy (definition, epidemiology, classification and management)  Paraplegia: causes and management. Tetanus and Rabies (aetiology, Pathogenesis, clinical presentation and management.) Pancreatitis (acute and chronic) clinical presentation and management. Hyperuricaemia and Gout Osteomalacia and osteoporosis (epidemiology, aetiology, clinical presentation, investigations and mg’t) Host response to infection (humoral and cellular immunity), Immunity to parasitic infestations (malaria, Schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis etc) Multiple myeloma (Epidemiology, clinical features, complications and management)  Principles of anti-bacterial Chemotherapy. Malaria (clinical spectrum, management, drug resistant malaria, complications). Typhoid and Paratyphoid fevers: clinical Presentation, complications and management. Anaemia (definition, classification, epidemiology, diagnosis and management) Sickle cell disease (epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and management) Haemophilia and acquired bleeding disorders. Snake bite. (Epidemiology, clinical presentation and management). Pleural effusion (Aetiology, investigations and management). Diarhoea: acute and chronic (causes and management, food poisoning, travellers) Cholera (aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment), Cardiac Arrhythmias, Congenital heart diseases.

Systemic Hypertension (Cardiomyopathies, Cardiac arrhythmias, Multiple Myeloma Impotence, Disorders of pituitary gland: Hyperpituitarism/hypopituitarism, Pneumoconiosis , Pyomyositis Fibrosing alveolitis/ pulmonary fibrosis, X-ray features of common GI diseases, Chron’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Protein-losing enteropathy/ Tropical sprue. Cardiac emergencies, cardiac vascular supply and application to ischaemic heart diseases, Schistosomiasis, Onchocerchiasis: spectrum and therapy, Scleroderma/ mixed connective tissue disease, Epilepsy, Bronchoscope/ Bronchoscography + Chest X-ray, Endoscopy in Upper GIT, Pancreatitis, biliary tract and lower GI disorders , COPD, Dermatomyositis/ ploymyositis, giant cell arteritis, Hypersensitivity immune reactions and disease applications, Lipid synthesis and cholelithiasis, Immune complex mediated renal diseases (Eg Quartan Malaria nephropathy) Heart sounds, bruits and clinical implications, Fungal diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissues Cranial nerve lesions, Atopic eczema and other erythematous skin diseases, Simple lung function tests and application in respiratory failure, Tropical ataxic neuropathy/ subacute combined degeneration of the cord, Pancreatitis and other pancreatic diseases, Myeloproliferative diseases, Fluid and electrolyte balance, Aplastic anaemia.
